I became a systems administrator/support specialist in a small (about 120 users) medical company in tri-state area surrounding NYC.
At first job was fun and interesting, but within 1-2 years you learn almost all there is to learn, you stop progressing and it is really hard to move up to enterprise level administration as you know almost nothing about complexities and problems of enterprise size networks and processes involved.
The pay was relatively good, but no growth and no opportunities. Since then, I quit, went to school and got a Computer Engineering degree.
I work in a major Swiss bank now in USA performing as a requirements manager dealing with big projects, enterprise technologies and much interesting people, not even mentioning huge opportunities for growth!!!
Oh yeah, and pay is so much better!!!
